Kentucky Instructional Leadership Team Network

The Kentucky Instructional Leadership Team Network, established through the work of the Wallace Foundation in Kentucky and in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Education, and Jefferson County schools, assists schools and districts in the development and implementation of instructional leadership teams that operate as a “professional learning community (PLC).” For 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years, KILTN and KLA are joining efforts to provide rich experiences and opportunities for instructional leadership teams across the state to learn alongside KLA members and other state education partners to address adaptive challenges they are experiencing. The network engages the entire group of professionals in coming together for learning within a supportive, district/school learning community. Teacher and administrator professional learning is more meaningful and focused when conducted in a social setting, where team members can collaborate, share their ideas, serve as critical friends, and process new information with each other. When new ideas are processed in interaction with others, multiple sources of knowledge and expertise expand and test the new concepts as part of the learning experience. The professional learning community provides a setting that is richer and more stimulating.

Participation in KILTN is free to all districts/schools that wish to participate. Participation requirements include a district, school and teacher leader enroll as a train-the-trainer leadership team that will in turn train district/school instructional leadership teams on the network knowledge, skills and processes provided. The district/school commitment also includes attending sessions (two per semester), participate in and serve as pilots (as appropriate) for network initiatives, partner with other districts/schools to share similar experiences, materials developed and expertise and present at regional, state and national conferences when requested.

Participants will also have opportunities to attend KLA national consultant events, and to participate in KLA’s online learning community including Harvard University’s WIDE World Teaching and Leading for Understanding, Data Wise and Teaching with Technology approaches to improving teaching and increasing student achievement.
