Using Professional Learning Communities to solve problems of practice to prepare students for their dramatically different future instead of our past

 

October 2008

 

Cadre Session I:  Station WIIFM:  What’s in It for Me

 

How do the roles and elements of professional learning communities provide a base for schools to use protocols and data rather than being used by them?   

The focus for the first regional cadre session is to weave mission and vision with collaborative culture, focus on results, and analysis of student performance. 

The day will include:

  • practical sessions on learning and applying a variety of protocols that participants will be able to use immediately at the school or district
  • the “how to’s” of the  root causes and indicators of culture and climate issues
  • ways to analyze the impact on student achievement in school that are positive, proactive, and instructional  
  • a “just in time” session on using data wisely

National Speaker Event:  Franklin Schargel, “From At-Risk to Academic Excellence:  What Successful Leaders Do”

Lexington Center Bluegrass Ballroom

Based upon Franklin Schargel’s recent book, From At-Risk to Academic Excellence: What Successful Leaders Do, this session will bring together the wisdom and experience from over 50 schools that have been categorized as “high performing, high minority, high poverty.” Mr. Schargel will show us how the leaders of these schools succeeded in raising academic achievement, motivating students, boosting parent and community involvement, and applying the Three R’s—Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships.  He will also provide insight into the following:

How do school leaders build school cultures that diminish the likelihood of children dropping out of school?

What are the determinants of school success?

Cadre Session 2:  Inquiring Minds Want to Know

How do the roles and elements of professional learning communities provide a base for schools to use protocols and data to develop cohesive leadership which enhances inquiry and continuous learning?   

The focus for the second regional cadre session is to weave inquiry and leadership to developing continuous learning. 

The day will include:

  • practical sessions on learning and applying a variety of protocols that participants will be able to use immediately at the school or district
  • the use of the “ladder of feedback” to guide reflection on practices of both teachers and administrators
  • ways to identify and analyze the implications of inquiry and continuous learning in both the school and district setting
  • a “just in time” session on “International Connections for Cohesive Leadership”

 

December 10-12, 2008

 

International Summit:  Leading the Core Business in a Global Society

Louisville Galt House Hotel and Suites

 

Participants to this unique, innovative event will have the opportunity to interact virtually and in person with leading practitioners from continents and countries, including Australia, South Africa, Iraq, the United Kingdom, China, India, and the United States. This “cutting-edge” event is focused on three strands:  Effective Schooling, Effective Learning, and Effective Leadership in a global society. This timely Summit builds upon Kentucky’s work in developing instructional leadership teams and improving performance of under achieving schools and frames it for sustainability around a 21st century global network.

Cadre Session 3:   Beyond Diagnosis to RX: A Broader View

 

How do you go beyond the use of data to prescriptive actions?

During this third KLA session, we will draw from our International Conference content to see ourselves in the Chinese metaphor “as gardeners.”  The fate of the plant is solely determined by the gardeners’ selection of prescriptive actions and how the prescriptive actions are applied.  An annual snapshot is not sufficiently detailed or timely enough to inform and guide continuous improvement actions at the classroom level. We need a photo album of evidence. What will we do for those students who didn’t learn in order to prepare them to become global citizens?

The day will include:

  • practical application of protocols from The Power of Protocols

  • “just in time” professional development

  • PLC’s as the fuel for continuous improvement

  • establishment of a professionally enriching, results-oriented culture through PLC’s  

 

February/March, 2009

Cadre Session 4:  Cardiovascular Workout for Teaching and Learning

How do the roles and elements of professional learning communities provide a base for schools to use protocols and data rather than being used by them?   

The focus for the fourth regional cadre session is to weave teaching and leading with feedback, analysis of student performance, and continuous learning. 

The day will include:

  • practical sessions on learning and applying a variety of protocols that participants will be able to use immediately at the school or district
  • the “how-to’s” of the  root causes and indicators of teaching and leading
  • ways to identify and analyze the implications of teaching and leading in both the school and district setting
  • a “just in time” session on “Action Theory and Rocks in the Road”

 

March 25-26, 2009
